Download the trial, it's free. And quite scarily powerful.
Hopefully they'll work on the other parts just as hard as they do on the "Sims" part.

Following how game exchange rates seem to work from $ to £ and €, we get...

Around 49 £ and 69 €.

It's quite ridiculous really.

Darren
09-07-2008, 10:06
You haven't heard of Spore? !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, it's a game by the makers of The Sims which lets you follow a species from when it's just a little bacteria up to becoming a galactic empire.

The Creature Creator is just cut out of the later part of the game when you start evolving your creature, but with unlimited "DNA points" for buying body parts. So it's just a sandbox to keep us interested until Spore comes out.

And this Creature Creator, even in the free trial version, is amazingly powerful. So try it out.

You all lack my enthusiasm for creating cruel and unusual creatures and then unleashing them on a metaverse :p

I enjoyed it thoroughly today for some 6 hours straight and I intend to more tomorrow (err its today now). only stopped cuz of work. I have many civilizations to destroy with my spaceship.

I dunno, if you didn't like sims, you prob wont like this (but its better).

Stephen Hawkin

I am playing it now and I think it is great! I am in the tribal stage but I noted so many times where one can make divergent paths to the look and abilities of the species that the replayability is there.

Now if there had a multiplayer where you pit your species against another players species for dominance that would be even better.

I got to the galactic stage last night, killing and decimating all in my path! Then I figured out something about this game. It is easy to get to the galactic stage if you are a carnivore warrior race! I think that it is a morality shtick about this game is that to be a peace loving plant eater the level of difficulty is much higher.... I have to try that next time around.

Infinity
09-09-2008, 15:23
Its just as easy actually...

FYI :)

Holy crap is this game addictive. I've played numerous new races, and I've brought 2 to Tribal, 2 to Civilization, and 1 Space age in 2 nights/days. Spectacular game, and tons of fun. We'll have to get a buddy list going in-game so we can share critters.

Tho I have to admit I have yet to leave my own arm of the galaxy. It may get more interesting with macro stages.

Here is my short review of the game.

Overview - 3.6 Stars :D (5 would be best)
There is a lot of creativity in this game; which means the enjoyment you will get out of it is based off of the amount of effort and imagination applied while playing. You wouldn't want to sit down in front of this game and "veg out" because it isn't "thrilling." It is not the counter strike style play the same level over and over again for hours, mindlessly killing everything in sight. You actually have to actively think and "role-play" for this game to be exciting. This is the kind of game that years from now I am going to get in the mood to play and it will be a great distraction for a few weeks but then I will move on to something else. My biggest (and only) complaint is there really isn't much of a punishment for dying. When you die, you keep all your advancement and everything. That is why I give it 4 stars.

Cell Stage- 4 Stars
The cell stage is very much like a game of pac-man with no walls. But you can be the ghosts if you want too! The objective is to eat, grow and try to find "plans" for better cell parts. The cell stage is quite easy.

This stage just makes me laugh. I mean, cmon, you are a little cell running around eating meat bits or plant bits. There are some straight weird cells that try to eat you as well. I am easily amused so I get great joy out of seeing my small, helpless herbivore (slow moving makes it especially hard) getting wasted by these really fast, huge cells.

Creature Stage - 3 stars
In this stage, your creature has hit landfall. You start off looking like some hideous animal/cell hybrid. The goal is to get DNA points and find more "plans" to develop and evolve. You get DNA points by either allying with or destroying other species.

This part can be quite bland because after the first few species allied with/destroyed you are ready to do something else. But there really isn't much else to do. This part can be short if you rush through it but if you really want to be able to shape your species the way you want you have to spend quite a long time trying to find all the "plans."

Tribal Stage- 4 Stars
In this stage, you control the actions of a small band of your species. It is very similar to Age of Empires on a 25 man population cap. The goal is again to ally with or destroy the other tribes.

I found it pretty difficult to actually attack and destroy my enemies in this stage. It is much easier to convert them to be your ally.

Civilization Stage- 3 Stars
Your goal here is to ally with or destroy all the other civilizations on your planet. This is a unique hybrid of Civilization and Empire Earth style play. The ability to design the vehicles and buildings is definitely what saved this stage because I found it incredibly easy to attack and destroy everything. I literally spent 10 mins in this stage my first time through.

Space Stage- 4 Stars
Goal here is to build an interstellar empire. Colonize, Terraform, fight, explore. There is quite a lot to do.

I found the abilities very linear. There is not too much room for creativity in style of play. It is still very fun to explore and see all of the different species out there.

Haha, well im with ya'll in the addictiveness. Been playing it the last couple days non-stop :p.

Chayne, sorry to break it to you, but NWN2 doesn't live up to the first.
At all.
It's horrible.
Painfully horrible.
And boring.

I'd take it back and swap it for Oblivion's expansions.

Sorry to make you feel like you wasted monies. But that's my - and most of the NWN fans in the worlds' - opinion.

EDIT: Lol, Huge's signature: Spore-Addict :D

Yep, played the crap out of it. The biggest difference in the two to me was the D&D core rule changes that affected classes, skills, and leveling. I've enjoyed them both, but for me NWN2 was just as fun as the original.

astrah
09-19-2008, 01:30
So you can't have the creature creator and the game installed at the same time?

Laz
09-19-2008, 01:55
The creature creator is part of the game, so you have to uninstall the solo creator to get the full game installed properly.

So really, buying the Creature Creator for $10 and getting $5 off the full game, is like paying $5 more bucks than the full game cost.

astrah
09-19-2008, 03:02
Ah. I see and that's not something that mention anywhere on the packages.

Morgan Skywalker

I just DLed the creator for free, so it didn't bug me.

Laz

What happened, is they released the full version of the creature generator, before they released the full game so people could try it out and EA could make some money off the hype of the game. A demo version is easily downloaded for free to show how cool the creature generator is. While it's very powerful, in the end the game is more about how you play that creature than how it looks (though how it looks can play a huge role in how you play it and such).

I've just spent two hours researching Spore online...and I'm sorry to say that not only will I NOT be buying it, I will not be purchasing any items from EA ever again.

I do not appreciate corporate backed spy ware being embedded within games, pre-programmed to download marketing information in an invisible manner so that you cannot stop it. I also do not like it that this spy ware cannot be deleted from your computer unless you reformat, which brings its own issues.

According to a lot of angry people, the DRM limits install to three occasions. Seeing as reformatting or upgrading is a frequent occurrence, it's three strikes and you're out. Mass Effect apparently had the same problem - players who were unfortunate enough to have used their limited installs were treated like criminals, as if they had no right to be needing a reinstall. The DRM is linked to the spy ware at that.

Whilst it looked a lot of fun, I won't have anything like that snuck onto my computer by a corporation.

If no one knew about the use of the SecuRom, sorry to tell you. I'm glad I did the research now though...

If I had seen the same info before I bought Spore I wouldn't have either. They did raise the install # to 5, but still, it's BS and it's caused issues with other games, namely BF2142. I don't know what Username/PW I used for it and without it, the game is a coaster. DRM is ruining more games than any pirating ever did or will.

Points at what Chayne and Laz said.

Same here... I've already gotten my second "please connect to the internet to play the game" notice when trying to load up Spore... At first I thought it was just a confirmation after installation, but the frowning began after I got the second one.... now that I know it's DRMs... *sighs*

Further to my earlier post, I can also report that there was a grave mistake by Amazon.co.uk.

When the issues regarding DRM and SecuRom were discovered by customers, for whichever reason (albeit the most common opinion of those vocal customers is that EA pressure was brought to bear), Amazon.co.uk operated censorship upon reviews of Spore to bring about a positive effect.

Yes. Negative reviews, reviews of low score and reviews that mentioned the DRM were prevented from being aired to the public.

Amazon.co.uk have since fixed the 'glitch' that caused this absence of public opinion and advisement.

Apparently this has happened elsewhere on other merchandise sites that stock and sell Spore - according to what I have read.

Spore may be good. It may be bad. I'm never going to find out.

Nail meet coffin. EA, shame on you.

Guys, I just came across this in a comic that's been going around the SGC lately - xkcd (http://xkcd.com) (Thanks for showing it to me, Katie :) ).

http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/steal_this_comic.png

If the brass thinks this goes against our "No talk about piracy" policy, I understand if you delete this post; though in its defense, this is a comic, it is meant to be considered a joke - and in my view - a good wake-up slap.

Either way, I believe this was appropriate for what's been posted in this thread recently.
