The first step to freedom.
With the rain being blown into his face Penn was not enjoying this nights watch.
“Why does he need us to keep guard?” He thought to himself as he looked back toward where he could hear his God entertaining some guests.
“Did you hear that Penn?”
“What...” He said turning back to look in the direction the Jaffa with him was looking.
Ponting towards the woods nearby “I thought I heard something over there. Must just be this rain.” With his mind back on what he needed to do Penn started scanning his surroundings. As he was looking towards some trees he spotted what looked like a hunched shadow dart out from behind one tree and disappear behind another. “Kel nok Jaffa.”
“Kree, go see what it is.” replied the other Jaffa. Nodding Penn broke into a jog towards the last place he saw the shadow.
Stopping at the tree he looked for any signs of an intruder. Kneeling down to look for any tracks he paused as he heard something move not far off to his right. Turning he leveled his staff at the shadow. “Kree tol Jaffa. I am not an enemy.” Said the shadow as it stepped out from the bushes. As they got closer Penn could see it was a woman hiding something in her arms. As she stepped closer still he could see that it was one of his Gods Jaffa. “Kel shak Jaffa do you want to get yourself killed?” he said lowering his staff. “What is that you have?”
“It is nothing.” she replied as she clutched the bundle closer to her. “If it is nothing then give it to me.” “No...Just go...” Taking a step towards her Penn reached out for the bundle, only to stop as he heard a whimper come from it. “Show me what that is!” he demanded raising his staff and pointing it straight at her chest.
Crouching down she carefully uncovered part of the bundle to reveal a baby. “She is going to be sacrificed tomorrow.” she said looking up. “Please let me take her to safety.”
Standing there Penn starts to think about what to do. “How has she managed to do this without my lord knowing? Is he testing my loyalty? Does he even know this is happening?”
Standing the woman gently rocks the baby as she starts to grow restless. “If you take us back she will be killed and for what? Because it amuses Him!”
“Silence shol'va! I must think.” Glancing back towards his post Penn sees that Moloc is not coming for them. “Go! And never return for if you do He will surely kill you...He will probably kill me for failing him in this.”
Turning from her Penn headed back to where he came from not caring weather she left or not.
“Jaffa did you find it?” the other Jaffa said as he appeared.
“No it must have just been an animal scared by the rain.” Penn replied. Sighing he took up his place guarding the entrance once again.
