Just so you know ... I'll be doing something of a focus on fanfic in an upcoming episode of Gate Buzz. Specifically I'll be running a competition (details to be determined, you'll hear about it in the podcast though).
The competition boils down to being a SGW themed Drabble contest. What is a drabble? Well, that was left as an exercise for the listener to research - competition before the competition so to speak. So ... before the actual competition gets under-way ... who wants to be first to post a reasonably complete definition of what a Drabble is? :-)

From Wikipedia:
A drabble is an extremely short work of fiction exactly one hundred words in length, although the term is often misused to indicate a short story of less than 1000 words. The purpose of the drabble is brevity and to test the author's ability to express interesting and meaningful ideas in an extremely confined space. Richard N. Hill recently coined the phrase "dribble" to describe a story that is only 50 words.[citation needed (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Citation_needed)] Michael Kent of The Next Big Writer used "droubble" for a double drabble, a story in exactly 200 words. More information and correct definitions are found at Save the Drabble. http://community.livejournal.com/savethedrabble/ (http://community.livejournal.com/savethedrabble/)

Hmm, from google define it says "an exactly 100-word fanfic, no more, no less"

The best thing about a drabble is the brevity. It's easy to use too many words, the challenge is to use less.
A favourite writing exercise of mine is to write something (anything, of any length), then edit it down to 1/2 it's previous length, then repeat to take it to 1/4 of its initial size while still saying the same thing. In other words: make every word count.
A drabble is one hundred words, exactly no more and certainly no less ... which is why it makes a perfect competition to run. :-)
